Kadıköy Today

KADIKÖY TODAY

In order to be able to define “Life in Kadıköy”, it would be unfair on the present, future, youth of Kadıköy and their youth if we bring out history, history of Kadıköy only with a "nostalgic" approach.

Should we not talk about what is left to us from this past, history; how to protect, enrich, bring what is left to us from this past, this history as an integral part of our future rather than trying to seek the Kadıköy of the past in the researches related to the history of Kadıköy belonging to the “GREAT INHABITANTS OF KADIKÖY" like Adnan Giz, Dr. Rüştü Dağlaroğlu , Salih Zeki Kutluay, Nezih Neyzi;  in the literary works of Hadun Taner; in the significant successes of Fenerbahçe Sports Club integrated with Kadıköy and the inhabitants of Kadıköy; the contributions of Kadıköyspor and Modaspor to Turkish Basketball; the song of the maestro Münir Nurettin Selçuk titled "I’ve come to Kalamış to have some sweet peace"; the names of Kadıköy's neighbourhoods, streets, roads which are multi-coloured, lighted and witty like Söğütlüçeşme, Şaşkınbakkal, Acıbadem, Yeldeğirmeni, Hasırcıbaşı, Dereağzı, Göztepe, Fenerbahçe, Caddebostan, Bostancı, Suadiye, Kızıltoprak, Moda, Mühürdar, Bahariye, Kuşdili, Koşuyolu, Selamiçeşme, Bağdat Caddesi, Muvakkıthane Caddesi, Kurbağalıdere; the compositions of Selahattin Pınar; Süreyya Paşa Cinema, one of the most magnificent monuments of our opening to the West;  in Koço; in Todori; in the tramcars stored in Hasanpaşa; the dervish convents and Islamic monasteries calling to proclaim the past; its mosques, churches, synagogues, fountains, Turkish baths, beaches left to the memory of the past, chalets, mansions?

And in this context, is the inhabitant of today's Kadıköy not polite, broad-minded, sharing, civilized, sensitive, aware and responsible like his father, mother, grandfather, grandmother and all the past generations?

Is it not "Nice" in one word? Is it not nice to be born in Ksdıköy, grow up in Kadıköy, fall in love in Kadıköy, become anxious in Kadıköy, see, caress, and live the redbuds, horsechestnut and Japanese roses?

Is it not nice to see and mingle with the inhabitants of Kadıköy who are active and calm; hasty and hot-blooded, smiling and bright at Altıyol, Bahariye, Iskele? Is it not nice, very nice to share the unique and spectacular skyline of Istanbul from Mühürdar at sunset while holding the hand of a lover, stroking the hair of a "lover"? Is it not nice to grieve the first separation from a loved one in Kadıköy?

Are the minds and hearts of inhabitants of Kadıköy not nice as they live with animal love, love of nature, tree, and child, love of foliage as well as human love?

Is it not beautiful to live within and share with the inhabitants of Kadıköy who call to account even a paving stone not a street or road; even a single branch not a tree; even a balcony not the entire building?

Is the present and future of Kadıköy not nice like its past; is the youth of Kadıköy not nice like their elders?

In a more definite expression, would Kadıköy and “Beauty” not be considered synonymous?

Does Kadıköy not continue the definition of "Model Town" today like the past by developing in every sense in accordance with the cinemas and theatres, concert halls, educational institutions, bookstores, youth clubs, cultural and shopping centres, super - hyper- mega markets, health institutions, industry, modern settlement sites, nursing homes, sports facilities, natural beauties, parks, non-governmental organizations; progressive, democratic, broad-minded, literate inhabitants and modern local management integrated with Kadıköy and the inhabitants of Kadıköy and the requirements the "Knowledge Era"?

Thus, Municipality of Kadıköy is putting into practice the “Kadıköy Municipality Global Transformation / Governance Project” which is the first "Digital Municipality / e-Municipality Project” of Turkey with requests and direct contributions of all the inhabitants of Kadıköy.

"KADIKÖY IS A DYNAMIC FEAST"

Famous writer Ernest Hemingway, the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature says the following in his literary work "A Moveable Feast":

“If you had the chance to live in Paris at a young age, Paris will always be with you wherever you go until the end of your life.

“BECAUSE, PARIS IS A MOVEABLE FEAST”

So; as we have tried to define in brief up to here; is Kadıköy not a "Small Paris" with its past, today and future; longings, expectations and hopes; with all its material and spiritual existence? Indeed,

Don’t we mean this when saying “LIVING IN KADIKÖY IS A PRIVILAGE"?

At that time, can we not say the following by being inspired by Hemingway: "During your life, no matter when; if you had the privilege to live in Kadıköy; Kadıköy is going to be with you wherever you go until the end of your life.  BECAUSE KADIKÖY IS A MOVEABLE FEAST".

So, with the realization of “Kadıköy Municipality Global Transformation / Governance Project”, each inhabitant of Kadıköy and each “Friend of Kadıköy” will carry Kadıköy on his laptop computer, mobile phone but most of all very close to himself; in his heart wherever he goes in the world, wherever he is.

Some may say “this is too much”. We think that even this is not enough for our Turkey and Kadıköy which are both great regarding their history, geography, people and traditions.

All these facts remind us the historical words of Mustafa Kemal addressed to the Chief of Staff of the Forces Commander Marshall Liman Von Sanders in Çanakkale.

At one of the most critical moments of Çanakkale war, the Chief of Staff of Marshall Sanders calls Mustafa Kemal who is only 34 years old at the time and says:

“The situation is fatal; what should we do?”

Mustafa Kemal’s reply: “Give all the forces under my command.” Surprised Chief of Staff carelessly asks the following question: “Would it not be too much?” Mustafa Kemal’s more meaningful, stunning and historical reply is:

“IT WILL NOT BE ENOUGH.”

Did the history, our history, world’s history not entirely verify the sayings of Mustafa Kemal? Did the targets which were determined for Himself and His Turkey by the others not fall short?  Are they not insufficient?

This is why the targets defined by Kadıköy Mayor, Selami Öztürk, for his team members in Kadıköy Municipality and all the inhabitants of Kadıköy must fall short and will fall short.

The "Kadikoy Municipality Global Transformation / Governance Project" as one of the new targets of Mr. Selami Öztürk and Kadıköy Municipality and the inhabitants of Kadıköy will set superior and higher goals for Mr. Öztürk and his fellow townsmen, the inhabitants of Kadıköy, when put into practice.
